Why Do Most Smartphones No Longer Have Removable Batteries?

If you're an early mobile phone user, it was normal for your phones to have removable batteries in the early 2010s. However, as phones with non-removable batteries have grown popular, mobile phones with removable battery are nearly disappeared.

Nowadays, in addition to the non-removable batteries on mobile phones, laptop manufacturers have also stopped producing removable battery devices, and many laptop batteries have also become non-removable.

Technology development requires continuous updates, products that are out of date are becoming obsolete. The previous mobile phones were not only heavy but also bulky. In addition to the small size of today's smart phones, lots of features and functions are also very advanced. As a mobile phone manufacturer, in order to meet consumer needs, they can only continuously improve their mobile phone device.

Why there are more and more non-removable batteries?

1.Lighter and thinner design

Despite great advances in battery technology, batteries are still inherently dangerous products. Batteries store energy between negative and positive electrodes, separated by a thin electrolyte. If these electrodes were in direct contact in some way, it would cause a short circuit and generate a lot of heat. In this condition, in turn, generates more heat, causing the thermal reaction to run out of control and potentially causing the battery to catch fire or explode.

Although it is rare to see news of mobile phone devices exploding due to charging, these dangerous things still happen occasionally.

For this reason, the removable battery needs a hard plastic case to prevent accidental damage, especially when it's not attached to the phone. This case adds bulk and weight to the smartphone. So when consumers want thinner and lighter designs, one of the solutions engineers have come up with is to install non removable batteries.

2.Better battery technology

The introduction of lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries allowed smartphone battery to last longer. While more powerful chips and better screens lead to increased battery drain, the simultaneous evolution of battery materials and capacity allows smartphones to last all day.

This increased capacity means users no longer need a backup battery to replace during the day. Meanwhile, advances in charging technology mean that the battery can now go from empty to full even in an hour.

Smartphone and smartphone accessory manufacturers offer power banks that allow you to charge devices even when away from an charging outlet. These devices range from small single-charge power banks to massive 20,000 mAh devices that can power your smartphone for an entire week.

3.Mobile phone entrance protection

As smartphones become more and more expensive, consumers are demanding longer life and greater protection of their phone. After all, if you're paying a month's salary for a phone, it should be able to withstand everyday wear and tear, including protection of your phone from accidentally falling into the water.

That's why smartphone makers fortify their devices by sealing the case so that phone user can not remove the battery for power charging. But users also don't have access to replaceable batteries when they seal the phone.Non removable batteries give your phone better protection.

Furthermore, manufacturing thin and light devices with closed enclosures requires a higher level of manufacturing. If you look at the waterproof camera, you'll see that it has a thick battery cover held by a thick rubber gasket.

4.Mobile phone location tracking

People nowadays go shopping without cash or wallet, they just take out their mobile phone and scan the QR code for payment. In this cashless society, mobile devices are highly mobile and can therefore be easily stolen and resold. Additionally, smartphones now contain a lot of highly sensitive personal data, allowing criminals to steal not just your hardware phone, but even information such as your personal banking.

That's why many smartphone makers now allow device tracking even when you turn off your phone. This feature allows you to track your device and prevent smartphone theft.

However, removing a smartphone's battery cuts its power, effectively killing its tracking ability. Sealing the battery inside the case makes it nearly impossible to remove it without tools and expertise, so you can keep track of it even if you have it turned off.

5.Disadvantages of non-removable batteries

Although non-removable batteries bring us some advantages, there are still some disadvantages. With the great progress in current battery technology, it is still possible for the battery of a smartphone to swell. When this happens, you must replace it as soon as possible because the safety of the battery has been compromised.

With replaceable batteries, removing the old battery and installing the new one is a simple process. But since most smartphones have non-removable batteries, to replace the battery, you must take the device to an authorized service center for replacement. Also, when the non-removable battery swells, it can damage the phone's case. However, due to the quality of mobile phone batteries now, such problems should rarely occur.
